The visual appearance of a product is important and sometimes even crucial to the commercial success of an article. In addition to products which are meant to serve a decorative purpose or goods traditionally incorporating elements of commercial art, product design today is adding value to all kinds of utilitarian objects and even to purly technical devices.
The industrial design protects the colouring and shape of commercially usable articles which appeal to the eye.

Type faces
A special Type Faces Law stipulates that legal protection of new type faces is based on the Designs Law (in German), taking into account some exceptional features.
