57AbstractABProvided is a control method that is intended for an inverter which is configured by a plurality of series circuits, each comprising two switching components, being connected in parallel with one another with respect to a capacitor connected in parallel with a direct-current voltage source and the connection point between switching components being used as the alternating-current output terminal for each phase, wherein the control method involves controlling the switching components using PWM pulses obtained by comparing output voltage command values for the respective phases with a carrier. On the basis of an output of a counting means common to the phases, modified PWM pulses are generated such that relative to an assumed PWM pulse obtained by comparing, with the carrier, a time average value of phase output voltages in a period corresponding to one cycle or multiple cycles of the carrier, the total pulse width of each phase in the period is substantially the same and such that the generation timing and/or the generation frequency of pulses of at least one of the phases is different from the others. Because of this, generation of heat is suppressed by reducing a ripple current component in the capacitor, thereby enabling cost reduction.
